The theme of the conference was “Societal and Environmental aspects of Interdisciplinary Scientific Research”. The conference was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) R K Shevagaonkar (Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi), distinguished keynote speakers Mr. Krishna Kant (Head, EMC Academic Alliance – Southeast Asia, Russia & ANZ), Mr. Rakesh Verma (Vice President & CTO, Samsung Heavy Industries India), Prof. (Dr.) Raj Singh (Vice Chancellor, G.D. Goenka University) and Prof. (Dr.) D K Jha (Dean, School of Engineering, G.D. Goenka University and Chairperson REDSET 2014) by lighting of the lamp. This was followed by Saraswati Vandana recited by students.
The inaugural ceremony started with a welcome speech by the Conference Chair Prof. (Dr.) D K Jha, in which he presented REDSET as a competent forum for researchers from academia, industry, research and government organizations, and also shared the detailed program of REDSET-2014.
Prof. (Dr.) Raj Singh, Vice Chancellor GD Goenka University, provided his views on the current technologies from a bystander’s perspective. Relating to the theme of the conference he discussed the impact of technology on society and environment. He added that the current generation is very fortunate to be born in this era where there is so much technological dynamism. He cautioned however that this technological advancement must be dealt with care. He concluded his speech by wishing success to the conference and unveiling of the conference proceedings.
Addressing as the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) R K Shevagaonkar spoke on the mutual interdependence of Science, Engineering & Technology, which are the keywords of the conference theme. He emphasized on the importance of all three fields and how advances in Science offer new capabilities, new materials, or new understanding of processes that can be applied through engineering to produce advances in technology. Advances in technology in turn open opportunities for new scientific investigation. He also highlighted the significance of interdisciplinary research which is the buzz word as most of the modern day problems cannot be resolved effectively by one particular discipline.
Addressing as keynote speaker, Mr. Rakesh Verma, Vice President and CTO Samsung Heavy Industries India, talked about offshore engineering solutions provided by Samsung Heavy Industries India. He gave an overview of the latest technology used in ship building like PDMS modeling with a Focus on Health Safety Environment compliance. He displayed the structures of FPSO Topsides, Fixed Platforms, Semi-submersible Drilling Rigs, etc. engineered by Samsung India and constructed at Samsung Korea. Mr. Verma was impressed with the natural beauty and infrastructure of the university and invited our students to work at Samsung Heavy Industries India after they graduate.
Second keynote speaker of the day, Mr. Krishna Kant (Head, EMC Academic Alliance – Southeast Asia, Russia & ANZ) talked about the opportunities in the field of Big Data and Cloud Computing.
